Study of Play-Based Curriculum in Preschool Based on Montessori Theory

Abstract
The aim of the present study is to study the play-based curriculum in preschool with an emphasis on the Montessori approach and theory. The importance of paying attention to play, as the main and natural context for children's learning in preschool, has been the focus of many educational theorists in recent years. Montessori theory, with its emphasis on active learning, freedom of choice, respect for individual differences, and a prepared learning environment, provides a rich framework for developing and implementing a play-based curriculum. In this study, using a qualitative approach and the method of content analysis of authentic documents and texts, the most important dimensions and components required in designing such a curriculum have been identified. The findings showed that components such as providing an appropriate learning environment, practical educational tools, freedom in choosing activities, the guiding role of the instructor, positive social interaction, and formative assessment are among the requirements for implementing a play-based curriculum based on Montessori theory. Accordingly, it can be concluded that utilizing the aforementioned components can pave the way for comprehensive development, improve cognitive, social, and emotional skills, and facilitate the learning process of preschool children.
